Autumn in New York City.

Halloween is considered to be one of the most celebrated holidays in America. If you are going to the United States at the end of October you surely shouldn’t miss this event!

Every state, every city, every small town has its own parades, festivals and parties dedicated to Halloween! Halloween’s origin lies deep in centuries. According to some opinions its history began in 17th century as Celtic harvest holiday called Samhain, meaning summer’s End. Now Halloween is closely connected to the celebration of the Catholic feast of All Saints’ Day which is celebrated on the first of November.

New York, the biggest USA city has one of the greatest Halloween parades. It takes place at 19.00 on 31st October. Many visitors from all over the country come to see and participate. People in strange and scary costumes are invited to a parade coming along Sixth Avenue from Spring to 21st St! It’s the only night-time parade in the whole country! Here guests can expect 42 bands of different musical styles, thousands of participants and a lot of fun! On 29th October other nine Halloween parties took place throughout the New York City. These parties included free activities for kids to enjoy, with haunted houses, hayrides, storytelling, and costume parades. Starbucks’ Great Halloween Party in Central Park was the main event of the day with live music, puppet shows, face painting and much more. Each of the 5 New York City districts had its own Halloween party too Bronx inhabitants were invited to Van Cortlandt Park and St. Mary’s Recreation Center: those who live in Brooklyn  to Brownsville Recreation Center on Linden Boulevard between Christopher Street & Hegeman Street. Manhattan’s show was on Pelham Fritz. Queens had Playground for All Children on Corona Avenue. Visitors and residents of Staten Island could have enjoyed a performance on South Beach Roller Rink. So coming to New York on Halloween is a good chance to get acquainted with one of the oldest and most original American tradition.

For those who are going in New York in November, there are some more interesting events. For example, on November 6 starts ING New York City Marathon. The ING New York City Marathon is one of the world’s great road races, drawing more than 85,000 applicants. All sport-lovers are welcome. Here you will have a chance to see world-class professional athletes and just sport enthusiasts. For music (particularly country) fans it will be interesting to see 39th annual CMA Awards ceremony. Best country singers from all over America are expected! The ceremony will be hold on 15th November. And of course, in November, like in all other months you can visit all New York attractions make shopping on 5th avenue, climb on the top of the Empire State Building or just walk through the Central Park. New York has a lot to offer! Just don’t miss it!

how humid is New York City during autumn and winter?
I’m wondering whether I should buy a humidifier - I check weather.com and it’ll report that the dew point is, for example, 43 degrees F and that the corresponding humidity is 67%. 67% seems pretty high (compared to an arid, desert environment). Is 67% relative? what is this a measure of exactly? Is there a better way to find out how much moisture is in the air? Thanks

All reported humidity is relative. The 67 percent means that the water content in air, in terms of partial pressure, is 2/3 of that of saturated air at the reported temperature. You can obtain a vapor pressure table for water and check it out, but most people don’t have the foggiest notion of how to do this. The dew point is the temp at which ambient air, if cooled, would become saturated. Generally dew points below 40 F can cause very dry air at room temperature. Since New York temperatures are often below 40 F in the winter, a humidifier would be advised if dry air bothers you.
